A man embroiled in a domestic dispute fatally shot an officer who responded, then shot his wife and killed his two small children before committing suicide, police said.
Officer Dan Seely was shot in the face Saturday after chasing Paul Ely Jr. down the hallway of an apartment where his estranged wife and children lived, police spokeswoman Debbie Cargill said. After shooting Seely, Ely shot his wife in the gut, ran to a neighbor's house with his two small children and killed them before shoot-ing himself, Cargill said.
Seely, 40, died about an hour after the shooting. Christina Ely, 27, was hospitalized and later listed in satisfactory condition.
Her children, Jessica, 5, and Corey, 4, were fatally shot.
The shooting happened at a house in a rural neighborhood about 20 miles north of downtown Anchorage. Neighbors said the house was divided into apartments. Christina Ely and her children lived in an apartment, but the gunman did not.
Ely was charged with violating the terms of a restraining order in September 1994.
