JFK Jr. finally did it.
Next it'll be Steve Young's turn.Young, 35-year-old all-pro quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, has long been considered one of the nation's most eligible bachelors.
But the ex-BYU star will soon be tying the knot. Young told reporters Monday night that he is engaged to marry BYU student Aimee Baglietto, 25. No date has been set, but Young said it would take place during the offseason.
"I guess the cat's out of the bag," said Young.
Young called Bay Area reporters with the news shortly after leaving the team's headquarters, where he had talked about his chances of playing this week after suffering a second concussion in three games.
"We were just kind of keeping it to ourselves," Young said. "I think a lot of guys in the (49ers) building knew for a while and a lot of our friends, obviously. We were not necessarily trying to keep it from anyone. But people talk, so it's out now. I figure that's one thing I forgot to say today.'
Young said the two met during the past offseason at BYU, where Baglietto was working on her degree in advertising. Young resides in Provo and Park City during the offseason.
"Steve showed up at our doorstep on Mother's Day with a bouquet of flowers and Aimee," said Young's mother, Sherry, from her Greewich, Conn., home. "Obviously, it was a great Mother's Day for me."
Young has had several serious girlfriends over the years, but this is the first time he's announced in the media that he is engaged.
"Aimee certainly looks like she's the one Steve has been waiting for," said Sherry. "We couldn't be happier for Steve and Amiee and it's a happy time for us too."
Sherry said it's been "very upsetting" seeing her son suffer through numerous injuries this season - including the two concussions in 14 days. "Steve called this week and said he feels fine and that the concussions aren't impacting him a great deal. But I'm grateful the 49ers are being cautious with him. They'll make sure he's healthy before they let him play."
