Yes, TV viewers, this is the Christmas special season once again.
It's a time to revisit "Rudoph the Red-nosed Reindeer" and "Frosty the Snowman" and "The Grinch who Stole Christmas." It's a time to let Jimmy Stewart and "It's a Wonderful Life" back into your home, along with all those versions of "A Christmas Carol."And, with the added emphasis on the holiday season by cable channels, there may be more Christmas programming now than ever before.
"Mrs. Santa Claus" is the highlight of what's new this TV Christmas season, but it's only one of a whole slew of new productions. Others include:
- "Timepiece," a CBS movie prequel to last year's "The Christmas Box" - both based on Richard Paul Evans' books.
- "The Christmas Tree," an ABC movie about a special tree for Rockefeller Plaza. The movie marks Sally Fields' directorial debut.
- "Christmas in My Hometown," a CBS movie about a high-powered executive who learns what Christmas and life are really all about.
- "The Munsters Scary Little Christmas," a Fox TV movie.
- "The Story of Santa Claus," an animated musical half-hour on CBS.
- A new TV-movie remake of "Holiday Affair" on the USA Network.
- "Christmas Every Day," a holiday comedy on the Family Channel.
And there are new variety specials headlined by Vanessa Williams, Kathie Lee Gifford, Marty Stuart, Alabama, Sandi Patty, Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton, among others.
Between old friends and new entries, this year's list is extra long.
The Deseret News Christmas specials list includes all the local broadcast channels as well as a good number of cable channels. (It does not include holiday-themed episodes of regular series - those will be updated in the daily paper.)
And, as always, TV schedules are subject to change at the whim of network, cable and local programmers.
