Tight end Chad Lewis of BYU has been named to the 1996 24-member Scholar-Athlete Team by the College Football Association.

Lewis, a 6-6, 250 senior from Orem, has a 3.4 cumulative grade point average in communications. Lewis has started all 13 games this season and had 33 catches for 355 yards and four touchdowns going into the Utah game last Saturday. He is a team co-captain and community involvement representative of the BYU student-athlete advisory council.The CFA Scholar-Athlete team was established in 1991 and acknowledges the accomplishments of the many young people who are successfully balancing athletics and academics.

CFA's 69 member institutions were asked to nominate individuals based on a series of criteria that included a cumulative GPA between 3.0 and 4.0, junior or senior athletic standing, completion of 50 percent of degree requirement, one full academic year completed at nominating institution and be a starter or meaningful reserve.

There are four repeaters to 1996 CFA Scholar-Athlete team. They are Florida quarterback Danny Wuerffel, Kansas State offensive receiver Kevin Lockett, Texas tight end Pat Fitzgerald and Virginia offensive back Tiki Barber. Also this year, four teams are represented by two players each: defensive back Lawrence Wright and Wuerffel of Florida, center Jason Johnson and Lockett of Kansas State, linebacker Jon Hesse and defensive end Grant Wistrom of Nebraska, and offensive lineman Jeremy Raley and Barber of Virginia. This is the third consecutive year that Kansas State has had two players named to the team.
