In a pose reminiscent of the famed shot of a triumphant Harry Truman holding up a Chicago Tribune blaring, "Dewey defeats Truman," Republican Chris Cannon holds up a copy of Wednesday's Salt Lake Tribune saying that his opponent, 3rd District Rep. Bill Orton was winning their race. Apparently not. Orton said he will call on the lieutenant governor's office to investigate at least 30,000 ballots he fears were processed by malfunctioning voting machines. The count from Tuesday's election had Cannon with 105,297 votes, Orton 96,590. Orton allowed that he would be surprised if a probe changed his defeat. "But I'm not going to concede the race until after an investigation is done on the irregularities." As of Thursday morning, the lieutenant governor's office had no official request from Orton and had no plans to investigate.
