Lane M. Palmer, Editor Emeritus of Farm Journal Magazine, died at his home in Hatboro, PA, November 9, 1996. He was 75.
Born and raised in northern Utah, he attended Bear River High School, then USU in Logan. A budding journalist, he became editor of school newspapers in junior high, high school and "Student Life" at USU. He served in the South Pacific during World War II, attaining the rank of Captain. He earned a M.S. at the University of Wisconsin in 1946. He joined the staff of North Carolina State in Raleigh that same year, where he became the editor of Experiment Station and Rural Life Editor of state-wide radio stations. He joined Farm Journal staff in 1952, serving as associate editor, managing editor, editor-in-chief, and after retirement, Editor Emeritus.Mr. Palmer served on the USU alumni advisory board, and was a recipient of the Centennial Award for Distinguished Service from the National Association of state Universities and Land Grant Colleges. He was honored by the Philadelphia Society for the Promotion of Agriculture.
He was a consultant to Presidents Ford, Nixon and Carter. He traveled with Secretaries of Agriculture Earl Butz, John Block, Ezra Taft Benson. He was the first journalist to be invited to the USSR, traveling deep into Siberia. He set up numerous fact-finding editorial missions to China, Inner Mongolia, USSR, Australia, S.E. Asia, Japan, Korea and Europe.
In addition to his wife, Anne (Ryan) Palmer, he is survived by three children: Cheryl Hobbs, of Westbury, Long Island, NY; Kandra Houston, of Trumbull, CT; Deems Palmer, of Lindenwold, NJ; three grandchildren; and a sister, Beth P. Tingey, of Brigham City, UT.
A memorial service was held at Horsham Friends Meetinghouse in Horsham, PA. An additional service will be held in Utah in the near future.
