French customs police have seized 700,000 pills containing the natural hormone melatonin, which is illegal in France though sold over the counter in the United States.

It was the first French action against the substance, which is used mainly as a sleep remedy in the United States but has been touted here as an anti-aging treatment.Melatonin imported from the United States was being sold for $40 to $60 per box of 50 pills, police said.
