MASHBURN SURGERY: Dallas Mavericks forward Jamal Mashburn underwent arthroscopic surgery to relieve pain in his left knee. The operation involved scraping the femur and drilling into the bone to stimulate healing.

U.S. AMATEUR: Gary Gomez of Salt Lake City qualified for the semifinals at the USA-Amateur Boxing Federation championships with a win Tuesday night. The heavyweight also earned a berth to the U.S. Olympic team box-offs.

HARBAUGH'S A FRANCHISE PLAYER: The Indianapolis Colts, hoping to avoid the possibility of losing quarterback Jim Harbaugh, notified the NFL on Tuesday that he has been designated a "franchise" player.
As a franchise player, he still may sign with any other team, but the Colts have the right to match any offer. If he leaves, they would receive two first-round draft picks in compensation.
VIKES RELEASE DEL RIO: The Minnesota Vikings released middle linebacker Jack Del Rio on Tuesday. Del Rio missed seven of the final eight games last season with a knee injury after signing a $3.2 million extension for 1996-97.
EAGLES SIGN ZORDICH: Strong safety Michael Zordich opted against testing free agency, signing a three-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles on Tuesday.
CONERLY PASSES AWAY: Charlie Conerly, who helped lead the New York Giants to the 1956 NFL title and was one of the best quarterbacks of his generation, died of complications from heart surgery. He was 74.

TEEN BANNED FROM OLYMPICS: U.S. Swimming's governing board punished a teen-ager for steroid use, opening debate about how international anti-doping rules should be interpreted.
The federation banned Jessica Foschi, 15, of Old Brookville, N.Y., from national and international competition for two years after a urine test last August turned up positive for steroids. Foschi's family has filed a lawsuit in New York State Supreme Court trying to force the UCLA testing lab to turn over the unused urine sample for testing by an independent lab.

CAPRIATI WITHDRAWS: Jennifer Capriati withdrew from the Paris Open minutes before she was due to take the court for her first match in 15 months with a strained muscle in the hip/lower back.
