House Speaker Newt Gingrich Saturday called on fellow Republican and presidential candidate Pat Buchanan to take a clear stance against racism after an aide was linked to white supremacists.
"I think we have to take a strong, clear position that we're opposed to anybody who is involved in racism or anti-semitism," Gingrich told reporters before addressing a group of Georgia Republican leaders."I would expect Pat Buchanan to take the position with his campaign and to make it clear that there's no room in his campaign for people who are anti-semitic or who are racist," Gingrich said.
Buchanan Saturday blasted rival presidential candidates Bob Dole, the Senate majority leader, and former Tennessee Gov. Lamar Alexander, for possibly planting a white racist in his Florida campaign organization.
Susan Lamb was appointed as a county co-chairman of Buchanan's campaign and two days later was fired for being a member of the racist National Association for the Advancement of White People.
Gingrich predicted "three or four viable candidates" would emerge from Tuesday's New Hampshire presidential primary but said the race would remain volatile.
