A Rose Park man who was shot in the chest by a police officer remained hospitalized in serious condition Tuesday.
William Steven Chaney, 35, was waving a .44-magnum revolver at his estranged wife Sunday when Salt Lake police officer Randy Hunnewell shot him through a window at the couple's home.Hunnewell, a member of the department's SWAT team, believed the woman - who had already been shot in the leg - was in danger when he fired upon Chaney, said Lt. John Hodson.
Police had responded several times in the past to the home, 1121 N. Goodwin Circle (1500 West), on domestic dispute calls. Chaney was ordered by a judge to stay away from the home, according to court records.
His wife, Lenora Chaney, was listed in stable condition at LDS Hospital Tuesday.
Hunnewell was relieved of his duty pending a review of the incident by the Salt Lake district attorney's office.
