Mapleton public works employees clean out a sinkhole and repair a water main that erupted early Thursday morning. The broken line created the sinkhole that swallowed one truck and closed U.S. 89 for about three hours. Residents in west Mapleton were without water for most of the morning. A man leaving a convenience store discovered the ruptured line at about 5:10 a.m. He pulled onto U.S. 89 and suddenly found the back end of his truck below ground. Water began spewing up around the truck and quickly flooded the highway. The truck was pulled from the 10-by-20-foot hole, and city crews spent about three hours repairing the leak.
