Looking for a simple way to cut the fat? Try using pancake syrup in place of any and all butter.

One tablespoon of pancake syrup has about 50 calories and no fat (true even of those syrups with "butter" in their name). Most "light" syrups contain only about 25 calories per tablespoon. Compare this to the tablespoon of butter you put on your pancake, which is pure fat and contains about 100 calories.

Jam is also a good substitute for butter, as are pureed fruits.

Another fat-cutting tip from the writers of the Berkeley Wellness Letter is to buy the right variety of canned baked beans.

Most brands are very low in fat, but a few contain 3 or 4 grams of fat (from pork or hydrogenated vegetable oil) per half cup.

All canned beans are excellent sources of fiber, but most are loaded with salt.

Finally, a tip for those who are calcium-deficient: Drink the milk left over after you finished your breakfast cereal.

It seems that many of the vitamins added to fortify most cereals end up in the milky liquid in the bottom of the bowl. So, down the stuff and get an added boost in nutrition.
