The University of Phoenix will open a new campus in Provo Friday to help serve more than 500 Utah Valley students who attend the college.
The new campus is located at 511 E. 1860 South in the East Bay Business Park. The new facility has 10 classrooms, meeting rooms, a resource center and space for a full-time staff. The accredited private university offers undergraduate and graduate programs in business, management, education, counseling, information systems, technology management and nursing. The institution has more than 27,000 students at 29 campuses in the western United States and Puerto Rico.
The University of Phoenix opened a Salt Lake campus in 1984 at about 5200 South on the west side of I-15. About three years later the college opened satellite campuses in Ogden and Provo. Currently, about 1,800 Utah students attend the college.
"Since our expansion to Utah County in October 1987, we have enjoyed continued growth," said Craig Swenson, vice president and director of the Utah campus. "The new Provo campus will allow us to continue to deliver the quality of service and education our students and the community have come to expect of us."
The University of Phoenix incorporated in Arizona in 1976 and soon after expanded to other Western states. Programs at the college are aimed mainly at working adults. In fact, undergraduate students must be at least 23 years old, and 84 percent of the student body is between the ages of 26 and 45. About 75 percent of students are enrolled in the business and management program, and more than half have more than 11 years of working experience.
Most students attend class one night per week and complete their bachelor's degrees in one to four years. Most students in the college's graduate program spend between 20 and 30 months earning master's degrees. The faculty is made up of working professionals who have advanced degrees in their field.
