Film star and director Mel Gibson, a favorite to win the Best Director Oscar for "Braveheart," had his appendix removed in emergency surgery over the weekend, New York film officials said.

Gibson had an attack of appendicitis on board a flight to New York from Los Angeles Saturday night, according to the Mayor's Office of Film, Theater and Broadcasting. He underwent a laparoscopic appendectomy at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center early Sunday, the office said.*****
