A British rugby star confessed to his wife that the other woman in their marriage was Princess Diana, according to Tuesday's latest newspaper report on Diana's extramarital loves.

Will Carling, 30, separated from his wife Julia in September, a month after newspaper reports linked the captain of the national rugby team to the princess.Carling has said publicly only that he and Diana became friends after meeting at a London gym. Diana has said nothing about their relationship.

The London tabloid Daily Mirror reported thirdhand today that Carling confessed to his wife before their separation that he had a love affair with Diana.

"It would be easy to say she's ruined my marriage," Julia Carling, a television show host, reportedly told a friend, who then reportedly relayed the conversation to the tabloid. "But it takes two to tango."

The paper did not identify the friend who reported the conversation.

The Carlings are to divorce after 15 months of marriage, the Daily Mirror said. Diana and her husband, Prince Charles, separated in 1992, and Diana agreed Feb. 28 to a divorce.

Diana admitted in a British Broadcasting Corp. interview that she had an extramarital affair with her former riding instructor. But regarding the report of the affair with the rugby star, "The princess feels that this is between Will and Julia," the princess said Monday night through a spokeswoman.

Carling's lawyer Hugh Young said today: "Mr. Carling believes that the breakdown of his marriage is an entirely private matter. It is my client's intention not to comment further."

The broadcast guide Radio Times quoted Carling on Monday as saying that sheer stubbornness had led him to continue his relationship with Diana.

"It wasn't very clever," the broadcast guide quoted him as saying.
