Incumbents in Davis County appear to like their jobs.

All eight of the Republican House members from the county, along with GOP Senate leader Lane Beattie and incumbent County Commissioner Gayle Stevenson, filed to run again.Democrats are challenging in the commission race, the state Senate contest and all but two of the House races in the county.

Two Republicans, L. Burke Larsen and David B. Andreason, are challenging Stevenson for the Republican nomination to the County Commission. One Democrat, Kathleen McConkie Collinwood, also filed.

Burke filed on the first day the county clerk's office opened for candidate filings; the rest of the commission candidates waited until Monday. Two other GOP candidates were rumored to be interested but didn't file: Clearfield Mayor Neldon Hamblin and former Layton councilman Bob Stevenson.

Former Commissioner J. Dell Holbrook said he was asked to run but is busy rebuilding the construction business he left five years ago when he ran for the commission.

"I have other interests at this particular time," said Holbrook, a Democrat from West Bountiful. "The timing isn't right. I'm re-establishing myself in the business community."

Democrats mounted challenges in the state Senate race, with D. Michael Bingham filing against Beattie, and all but two House districts. Only Republican Nora Thurgood Stephens, Sunset, the representative in District 13, has no opposition from either Democrats or a Libertarian candidate.

Bingham filed as a Democrat two years ago in the House District 19 race but was disavowed by the party as being a follower of splinter faction leader Lyndon LaRouche. LaRouche has run for president five times, the last from a federal prison where he was serving a term for communications fraud.

Bingham readily admitted being a LaRouche supporter and, despite being dumped by the party, his name appeared on the ballot because he filed in compliance with state election law.

Four Republicans lined up to challenge fellow GOP incumbent first-termer Rep. Ted Bradford in House District 20.
