Auditions have been scheduled for the following stage productions and companies:

- "THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA," for replacement roles in the Broadway company or any of the three national touring companies of Andrew Lloyd Webber's megahit musical.Open auditions for adult males and females. Singers with strong, operatic voices are required. All auditioners must sign up on Thursday, March 28, between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. at the Red Lion Hotel, 225 S. West Temple.

The auditions will begin promptly at 10:30 a.m. Bring your own sheet music along with a current photograph and resume stapled together. An accompanist will be provided. No tape-recorded music may be used.

Come prepared with music from the standard opera, operetta or "legit" musical theater repertoire.

- "ROBIN HOOD" on Tuesday, March 26, at 7 p.m. at the Off Broadway Theatre, 272 S. Main.

There are roles for six men and two women of various ages. There will be cold readings from the script. Some singing is required.

Bob Bedore, who co-wrote the script with Eric Jensen, is directing.

- "SURFIN' SAFARI" on Saturday, March 23, from noon to 2 p.m. at Desert Star Playhouse, 4861 S. Main, Murray.

DSP associate producer and artistic director Edward J. Gryska said some performers will also be selected for future productions during these auditions.

Be prepared to sing a Broadway-style song. An accompanist will be provided. All auditioners must be 18 years of age or over. Bring a photograph and current resume.

- "THE PORTRAIT, THE WIND, THE CHAIR," on Saturday, March 30, at 1:30 p.m. in the West Institute Building (northwest corner of 300 S. and 1340 East).

Roles being cast in the University of Utah Theatre School for Youth production are Lucy, 10, a girl who is worried and impertinent, yet playful and dramatic; Terroba, 14, who is stuffy and nervous (and who also plays Minnie in Act 2, which is a dream, and Minnie (grandmother at age 14 in 1950, who is fearless, fun and a tomboy.

Those auditioning for Lucy must be between 91/2 and 11 and those trying out for Terroba must be between 131/2 and 15 at the time of the auditions. Each role will be double-cast.

Josh Stewart, a Theatre School for Youth instructor, will continue to play the adult role of the Chairman.

The play, written by Y. York, will be made available for occasional presentation on an ongoing basis throughout the rest of this school year and part of the 1996-97 school year, including performances at the Theatre School for Youth and some regional and national venues.

The auditions will consist of theater games, improvised scene worsk and cold readings. Please arrive on time and expect to say most of the afternoon.

- UTAH MUSICAL THEATRE'S 1996 summer season on April 12 and 13 for both orchestra musicians and children.

- Instrumental auditions for UMT will be held by appointment only in the Val A. Browning Center for the Performing Arts at Weber State University, Ogden. Musicians are needed for the season's four productions ("The Will Rogers Follies," June 28-July 13; "The Sound of Music," July 19-Aug. 3; "Damn Yankees," Aug. 9-24, and a reprise of "Forever Plaid," July 5-Aug. 17).

Prepare a solo piece to perform. Aud-i-tion-ers may also be asked to sight-read. The audition should not exceed five minutes. A current resume and the names and telephone numbers of three references will be needed at the time of the audition. All positions are paid.

- Children's auditions for UMT will also be held April 12 and 13. Young actors, from reading age up to 16, are needed for "The Will Rogers Follies" and "The Sound of Music." The three-minute audition should include a musical selection and memorized poetry or monologue. An accompanist will be provided.

Rehearsals begin June 10. Children must be available morning, afternoon and evenings through opening night and all evenings during each production's run.

- "VOICE OF THE PRAIRIE," John Olive's lyrical love story set against the early days of radio in the Midwest, on Saturday, March 30, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. in Room 130 of the West Institute Building (on University Street across from Pioneer Memorial Theatre) and on Monday, April 1, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Egyptian Theatre, 328 Main, Park City.

Tony Larimer is directing the Park City Performances production, scheduled to run June 7-July 27.

The play has roles for two men and one woman, ages 20 to 55. Each actor plays multiple roles. Auditioners will be asked to do cold readings from the script. For further information, call the theater at (801) 649-9371.

- "THE SEATING OF SENATOR SMOOT," a Brigham Young University Margetts Theatre production being directed by Bob Nelson, on Wednesday, March 27, from 6 to 8 p.m., and Thursday, March 28, from 7 to 9 p.m., in Room D-341 of BYU's Harris Fine Arts Center.

Those auditioning should prepare to perform one or two short contrasting monologues or read from the script (copies available in Room D-581).

"The Seating of Senator Smoot" is Professor Eric Samuelsen's new play, commissioned by the university's film and theater department in commemoration of the Utah statehood centennial. The play deals with the three-year, turn-of-the-century congressional hearings over the seating of LDS Church apostle Reed Smoot in the U.S. Senate.

There are roles for five women and nine men, ranging from 18 to 60 years of age. Rehearsals begin April 2 and performances are scheduled May 29-June 5. For further information, contact Nelson at 378-3406.

- "INTO THE WOODS," reserved auditions on April 6, 8 and 9 followed by a "cattle call" audition on Saturday, April 13, at 2 p.m., to cast any roles not yet cast.

The Stephen Sondheim musical will be presented July 18-27 in the 3,000-seat Kenley Centennial Amphitheater as a co-production with the Layton Arts & Humanities Council.

Auditioners are asked to prepare a vocal selection from the show and a contrasting song of their own choice. An accompanist will be provided, but cassette tapes may also be used.
