Two Orem students at different elementary schools set bathrooms on fire Tuesday morning.

An 8-year-old Sharon Elementary student doused the floor and fixtures in a boy's restroom with gasoline and lighted them on fire about 10:15 a.m., Orem Police Lt. Mike Larsen said.In a separate incident just 15 minutes later, a 10-year-old Suncrest Elementary student lit paper in a trash can, as well as other paper products, on fire in bathroom at that school.

Orem firefighters responded to both schools shortly after the fires were reported. They were able to contain the blazes to the bathrooms, although Sharon Elementary sustained some smoke damage.

Neither boy was injured, although the 8-year-old, who carried a gallon of fuel to school in his backpack, accidently doused himself with gasoline, Larsen said.

"He was lucky he wasn't torched, with as much gasoline as he had on him. His clothes were soaked in gasoline," he said.

Both boys have been remanded to the Utah County Juvenile Court and will receive private counseling. No charges have been filed against either student yet, and no disciplinary actions have been taken by the schools or Alpine School District.
