Mary Alvajean Cook McCormick Cheppa, died in Salt Lake City, Utah on March 1, 1996 as a result of respiratory failure caused by COPD.
She was born March 31, 1931 in Medford, Oregon, the youngest of six children born to Alva Edwin and Violet Rose Casebolt Cook. "Jean" was raised in Gold Hill, Oregon, where her ancestors were pioneers.On August 13, 1947 she and Leonard Moody McCormick eloped to Reno, Nevada. They made their home in Southern California, where their three children were born, and where they were later divorced.
"Mary" began a new life with George Cheppa, who brought her great joy. They moved to Salem, Oregon where they lived until George died in January of 1986. Shortly after, she moved to Salt Lake City to live with her widowed daughter and grandsons. She was later able to move to her own home in Holladay.
Mary was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She enjoyed genealogical research, traveling, fishing, reading and especially cherished her family, devoted friends and many pets.
She is survived by her daughter, Marlene Marino Coleman and special son-in-law, Ron Coleman, of Salt Lake City; son, Larry Steven McCormick, of Lancster, Calif.; son, James Alva McCormick, of Salt Lake City; three grandsons: Robert James Burke, of Apple Valley, Calif.; Patrick Steven Marino, and his wife, April, of Murray, Utah; and David Leonard Marino, of Salt Lake City; a great-grandson, Brandon Zachary Burke, a dear niece, Jean-Marie Pedersen Cody, of Portland, Oregon also survives.
Her family expersses deepest gratitude to her dear friends Lillie and Jarl Jacobsen, Judy and Ray Jung, and to Dr. Jackson Woods of FHP for their devoted love and service to Mary.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 6, 1996, 12 noon at the South Cottonwood 13th Ward, 5235 So. Wesley Rd. (1100 East). Friends may call Tuesday, 6-8 p.m. at the Cottonwood Mortuary, 4760 So. Highland Dr. and one hour prior to services at the church. Interment, Holladay Memorial Park, 4900 Memory Ln. Funeral directors, Cottonwood Mortuary.
