Ira Kendall Hearn, Jr, 81, of Asheville, North Carolina, died Saturday, April 20, 1996 at his home.

Mr. Hearn was born in Norfolk, Virginia, the son of the later Ira K. and Elvira Maxwell Hearn, Sr. He served under General MacArthur in the SW Pacific during World War II as Colonel in the Army Corps of Engineers. He was a recipient of the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, and Army Commendation medals.Mr. Hearn moved to Asheville from Salt Lake City, in 1988. He was former CEO of Boyles Bros. International Drilling Co., former vice-president- operations for the Celotex Corp. assistant general manager of Kennecott Copper Mining Division, and chief operations engineer of US Steel's TCI Ore Mines and Quary Division in Birmingham, Alabama.

From 1961 -1964, Mr. Hearn served as mayor of Deerfield, Illinois. He was also a past president of University Club, Salt Lake City, the Utah Mining Assoc. , the Utah Chapter of AIME and the Salt Lake Chapter of AIIE.

He is survived by his wife, Jane Hearn; his son and daughter-in-law, Maxwell Kessler and Verna Hearn of New York and step-grandsons, Garrett and Alexander Michael.
