"Mac" was born April 5, 1913 in Montreal, Canada to Bessie Carrie Martin and Horace Dwight McMullen and raised in Burlington, Vermont. He attended Phillips Exeter, Cornell, University of Vermont, Andover Newton Theological Seminary, Princeton for doctoral studies, and was a Merrill Fellow at Harvard. He was an etymologist, a bibliophile, a philologist and logophile. His vocabulary was legendary and his precious sense of humor lasted until the end. Skiing was a passion in which he indulged until this year.

He married Marie-Louise Strehlau in 1941. They produced Garrett Yarwood, Deedee Corradini, Laura Martin, and Daniel Whitman. On Monday evening, April 22, 1996 at 8:15, Mac died surrounded by loving family and beautiful music. He wrote in a 1989 letter to a relative, "I think the most effective stance with regard to death is the realization of a significant life. The persons who adamantly deny the reality of their own death are those who have never lived meaningfully and creatively." Mac lived a full, creative and meaningful life, while being fully human. He wanted to be remembered as one who kept his commitments, no matter the cost.

Among his many accomplishments and public service through the years, he was happiest in his 16 year pastorate at the Holladay U.C.C. Church (Holladay Community) and his last 15 years as Minister of Counseling at Wasatch Presbyterian Church after becoming a licensed marriage and family therapist. He loved the 12 years he spent in the Middle East as president of the Near East School of Theology in Beirut, Lebanon and president of Aleppo College in Aleppo, Syria.

Surviving are his wife and children, four grandchildren, four step-grandchildren; two much loved sons-in-law, one daughter in law, and his only sister, Brenda Entwistle, Santa Barbara, California.

In lieu of flowers, he requested donations to the Research Fund, Division of Oncology & Hematology, University of Utah School of Medicine, SLC, 84132. A special tribute to Dr. James Kushner who helped give Mac five mostly good years after his cancer diagnosis. Suzanne, Donna, Peg, Kristen, Debbie, Mindy and Jenny - thank you for the tender care you administered.

Memorial services were held Saturday, April 27 at 12 noon, Wasatch Presbyterian Church, 17th East 17th South. Private interment of the ashes were held in the Holladay U.C.C. Memorial Garden. Funeral Directors: Evans & Early.
