Samuel David Smith, loving son, husband, father and friend, passed away April 29, 1996 at American Fork Hospital.

He was born May 5, 1969 at Fort Benning, Georgia to Nicholas Albert and MaryAnn Free Smith, the oldest of eight children. His childhood was spent in Georgia, Provo, Washington, Orem, Germany, Bountiful and Alpine. He graduated from American Fork High School and attended the University of Utah. Sam's marriage to his sweetheart, Rebecca dePaula, was sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. His wife and three beautiful daughters are the joy and concern of his life. His body was challenged by cartilage weakness which resulted in many injuries and surgeries. He was called to serve in the Spain-Barcelona Mission which he was unable to complete. At the time of his death he was serving as a teacher in the Alpine 11th Ward Primary. His family and friends regarded him as a hero. They enjoyed his wry humor and knew him as generous, mild mannered, tall and strong.Survivors include his wife; daughters, Hillary Marie, Lauren Ashley, and Gabrielle Nicole; parents; brothers and sisters, Priscilla (Steven) Westover, Nathan (Erica), Rebekah, Rachel, Charlotte, Zachary, and Catherine, all of Alpine; grandparents, Lory and Myrtle Joy Free, Provo; in-laws, Lynn and Sharon Zimmerman dePaula, Highland, Utah and their children, Angela (Albert) Peters, St. George; Nicole, serving in the Italy, Padova Mission; Tiffany and Matthew, Highland. He was preceded in death by grandparents, Albert A. and Glenden N. Smith.

Funeral services will be Friday, May 3, 1996, 12 noon, in the Alpine Stake Center, 98 E. Canyon Crest Rd., Alpine, where friends may call Thursday 7-9 p.m. and Friday 10:30 a.m. prior to services. Interment: Alpine City Cemetery under direction of Wing Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Samuel Smith Memorial Childrens Fund, c/o Bank of American Fork.
