Two Republican members of Congress, Susan Molinari and Bill Paxon, Saturday announced a unique joint venture: a baby girl.
Susan Ruby Paxon, born late Friday in Staten Island, New York, is believed to be the first child of two serving members of Congress.Both parents are in the House of Representatives, both representing New York state.
"We deeply appreciate the support and comfort of our friends and constituents during this pregnancy," Paxon said in a statement.
"We are truly overjoyed and overwhelmed at the birth of our daughter," Molinari said in the statement. "Susan Ruby is a special gift to us, and to our mothers, this close to Mother's Day."
Susan Ruby weighed 7 pounds and was 20 3/4 inches long.
In 1974, Yvonne Braithwaite Burke of California became the first member of Congress to give birth. Enid Greene of Utah was second, in 1995. And Blanche Lambert Lincoln, an Arkansas Democrat, is expecting twins this summer.
