Richard Gilbert Barton, M.D., passed away May 10, 1996 in Salt Lake City, Utah from heart failure.
Born November 12, 1926 to Horace Gilbert and Elizabeth Rushton Barton in Salt Lake City. Married Marjorie Peterson, August 31, 1948 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Later divorced. Married Margaret Stephens February, 1968. Later divorced. Married Kathleen C. Linford, December 30, 1982.Entered the University of Utah at age 15. Graduated from the University of Utah Medical School at the age of 21, in 1948. Interned at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles, California and did OB residency at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City. Dr. Barton taught at the University of Utah Medical School for a short time. Served in the U.S. Air Force from 1954-56, stationed in Morocco as a military physician.
Entered private practice in 1950 at LDS Hospital with his office at Memorial Medical Center. In 1963, he moved his practice to Cottonwood Hospital and was the first chief of the OB department, where he delivered the first baby born there. He was practicing actively until his death. He was completely devoted to his profession and passionately dedicated to his patients, who dearly adored him. His professional ethic was exemplary. Medicine was his life and his love. He performed countless acts of compassion for people that at his request remained anonymous.
Survived by his loving wife Kathleen; his children, Mrs. Randy Webb (Diana), Richard G., Jr. (Kathy), David B. (Janice), Dr. Jeffery H. (Debbra), Mrs. Randy Fox (Laurie), Mrs. Bruce Hurst (Holly) of Santa Clara; Christopher B. (Earlene), Mrs. Robert Adams (Becky) of Phoenix, AZ; Mrs. Robert Bennion (Sydney), Los Angeles, CA; Mrs. Anthony Quinn (Drew), Mrs. David Williams (Jill) stepdaughter, and 31 grandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents and his son, James Peter Barton.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 15, 1996, 12 noon, at the Cottonwood Stake Center, 1830 East 6400 South. Friends may call Tuesday evening from 7-9 p.m. at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, and Wednesday at the church from 11:00 to 11:45 a.m. prior to the services. Interment Salt Lake City Cemetery.
