Luana Patten, young star of such 1940s Disney films as "Song of the South," died May 1 from respiratory failure. She was 57.

Patten made her movie debut at age 8 opposite Bobby Driscoll in "Song of the South," a 1946 movie combining live action and animation. Patten acted in three successive films for the studio: "Fun and Fancy Free," "Melody Time" and "So Dear to My Heart."She took a brief hiatus from acting at age 13 to finish high school then returned for such films as "Johnny Tremain" and "Follow Me Boys."
