DRIVE-BYS DRIVING PROVO RESIDENTS AND POLICE NUTS

A rash of drive-by shootings with BB or pellet guns is becoming a major annoyance for Provo police and area residents.

"It's getting out of control," said Capt. George Pierpont of the Provo Police Department Tuesday.Police have gotten 25 to 30 separate reports over the past two weekends of windows shot out of homes and businesses. Three people have been hurt in the random shootings, suffering pellet wounds in their legs and backsides as they were walking or bicycling in the city.

"They're all over Provo," said Pierpont. "The damage done to the McDonald's on University Avenue totaled $3,000."

Pierpont said police are offering a $500 reward for information about the incidents and the suspects.

He said victims have described the vehicle involved as white, possibly a Volkswagen or Mercedes, with a "low-to-the-ground fender," possibly a 1995 or 1996 model containing two or three males.

When apprehended the suspects could face multiple charges of criminal mischief and at least three charges of aggravated assault, Pierpont said.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Provo Police at 379-6210.
