Who should be the Republican nominee for the 2nd Congressional District ? The answer is as easy as ABC (Anyone But Cook). All of the other candidates running for the nomination are good loyal Republicans who have shown by their service to the party, their communities, the state and the nation that they have the kind of integrity, character and principles that the majority of the people in this district desire to see in their representative. But Mr. Cook has not shown those qualities.

When he was asked what he would do if he lost the 1994 election, he said this would be his last race as a candidate. When he did lose the election, coming in a disappointing third with only 18 percent of the vote (after he had predicted that he'd win a close race), he was quoted by the Deseret News in the Nov. 9, 1994, issue: "I would never go back to the Republicans for $10 million. The Republican (Party) leaders are a bunch of arrogant elitists." Then in a letter to state delegates dated March 15, 1996, he says, "I have decided to run for Congress - as a Republican . . ." In that same letter he explains why he has decided to run as a Republican, "I chose to rejoin the Republican Party because many of the positions I have been fighting for - for years - are now at the forefront of the Republican agenda." So what he is trying to get the Republicans to believe is that it is the Republicans that have come around to his way of thinking. Maybe Newt Gingrich ought to be notified. One has to wonder if those are honest reasons for rejoining the Republicans, especially since he constantly criticized the Republicans and their agenda for the last two years from his position as a talk show host. When Enid Greene held her news conference Cook was there trying to embarrass her and then followed that act of low class by constantly playing a parody of Enid on his program.
