Six individuals who went the extra mile in the workplace will get "Mitsi" awards from the University of Utah's David Eccles School of Business on May 10.
The awards recognizes heroism in the workplace and was created by U. business professor Scott Young, who named it after a trustworthy Mitsubishi Montero that took him on extensive trips.Young had urged his executive MBA students to seek out individuals who had performed some heroic act or unusual feat in the workplace. Students voted to determine the outstanding heroes.
"Business schools, it seems, usually concentrate on the outstanding achievements of CEOs and rarely single out the accomplishments of everyday working people," Young said.
This year's list includes one former CEO, Spencer Kirk, who was nominated by a student who was a former employee.
All winners will be recognized during a lunch at the Olpin Union Building's Panorama Room.
The winners are: Kirk, Megahertz, U.S. Robotics, for numerous charitable acts; Jamie Fletcher, Dixon Paper, for outstanding customer service; Ralph Montgomery, a dentist who coordinates a free dental clinic for homeless and low income people; John Lundgren, a Salt Lake police officer who, while off duty, responded to an accident and pulled a man from his car; Fran Nilson, for providing extraordinary assistance to U. international students; and Diane Morell, a US WEST employee who leads a late-night basketball league for youths and coordinates a group for Hispanic youths.
