It's not like the old days at Alcatraz. With Sean Connery and Nicolas Cage on the famed prison island for the premiere of the movie "The Rock," people were scrambling to get in.
Several fans on water scooters surrounded the rocky island in San Francisco Bay in hopes of catching a glimpse of the celebrities and 500 guests as they arrived by ferry Monday night."It's a beautiful place to have a premiere," Cage said, "but this is really weird."
One invited guest who arrived on a sailboard peeled off his wet suit to reveal a tuxedo underneath. The National Park Service monitored the shoreline throughout the evening to prevent stargazers from crashing the party.
The Disney action thriller, which opens nationwide on Friday, was filmed at Alcatraz. Disney made a six-figure contribution to the park service to hold the premiere on the island, which closed as a federal prison in 1963.
