Doctors on Friday removed a 1 1/2-inch malignant tumor and surrounding tissue from the right lung of former talk show host Morton Downey Jr. and said they found no evidence the disease had spread.

"It looked like it was confined to the lung. There is reason to be fairly optimistic at this point," said Ron Wise, a spokesman for Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, where the 2 1/2-hour operation was performed.Downey, 63, blamed his cancer on more than 50 years of heavy smoking and has lent his voice to a new anti-smoking campaign advising young people to shun cigarettes.
