Michelle McGann's second straight Youngstown-Warren LPGA Classic victory was one for the record books.
McGann shot a course-record 64 on Saturday and finished by breaking the tournament mark with a 16-under 200 total on the Avalon Lakes course. Nancy Lopez and Deb Richard set the previous record of 203 in 1993."Just like in the men's tour, the gallery loves to see the long hitters," McGann said after her victory Sunday. "But there's so many good players out here, it's just a matter of who's got the hot putter. I guess this weekend I did."
She said she had thought she would have trouble making the cut after bogeys on five of her first six holes in the tournament.
"I just tried to get focused," said McGann, who shot a 7-under-par 65 on Sunday to successfully defend her title with a three-stroke margin over Kim Saiki. "Instead of jamming putts in, I just tried to feed them."
McGann salvaged a 1-under 71 in Friday's first round, taking advantage of her length off the tee to eagle the 451-yard, par-5 18th hole.
"I definitely think that was the turning point," McGann said. "Instead of going in at 1-over, I finished at 1-under after not playing well. That hole was definitely a big booster."
McGann, who began the round a stroke behind Richard, earned $90,000 for her fourth victory in two years.
Saiki was tied for the lead at the turn, but McGann birdied Nos. 10 and 11 and Saiki bogeyed the par-3 12th, three-putting from 18 feet.
