Healthy Choice microwave popcorn is a new product that's billed as low fat/saturated fat-free. You can try the natural or butter flavors. The box contains three 2.85-ounce bags for $1.59.
Edyth Jensen (married, frequent visits from kids and grandkids): "We tried the butter flavor Healthy Choice popcorn. It pops large white kernels, lightly salted, with good crisp popcorn flavor. A bit expensive for our budget though. I doubt we will buy it very often."Don Russell (married, five children at home, ages 6-16): "This new popcorn was a crowd pleaser at our house. Most everyone thought that Healthy Choice was as good as any microwave popcorn they had tried. The stiffest competition came from Orville Redenbacher. Although I'm not saying that microwave popcorn is the most healthy food there is, this new product seems to come as close as any on the market."
Nihla Lake (married, two children at home): "We tried the `natural'? flavor (that probably means plain, generic, unadorned, etc.). After we resisted the temptation to slather it with the `B' word (butter), we sat down with a large bowl to attempt to enjoy it. It wasn't very difficult - it was really good with just the right amount of saltiness. We have found Healthy Choice makes excellent products."
Linda C. Tingey (single mother, two teenage boys at home): "I like the way Healthy Choice talks about the saturated fat in its popcorn - a `trivial amount.' This was very good-tasting, with just the right amount of salt. My granddaughter liked it so much she confiscated the bag and took the rest of it home with her. For those who are in need of cutting back on fats, this will do the trick. I need to seek out the right product that will give more of a butter flavor. Actually, I'll try the butter flavor next."
Rich Firmage (married, four children, oldest 11 years old): "Few people in the world eat as much popcorn as my wife and kids. They are truly qualified to test this popcorn! My wife said this butter-flavored popcorn was too dry and not salty enough. Maybe that's why they call it Healthy Choice. I compared this stuff with our normal microwave popcorn. Healthy Choice has 4 percent total fat. Our brand has 17 percent. H.C. has 14 percent sodium, ours 17 percent. H.C. has 130 calories, ours 170. I didn't think it tasted too bad and as you can see, it is better for you. But my wife, `the expert,' loves the taste of popcorn so that is the reason she won't buy Healthy Choice again."
Conclusion: You can have your popcorn and eat it, too! If you're watching sodium and fat intake, Healthy Choice popcorn offers great taste despite its restrictions.
