Some big names will be hitting Wolf Mountain on Wednesday, Aug. 28, for an all-day music festival: the Smokin' Grooves Tour.

"Smoking" may have several meanings for this troupe, which is touring the nation courtesy of corporate sponsors trying to promote shoes (Doc Martens), CDs (various artists) and a chain of stores (House of Blues).Headlining is Cyprus Hill, a Los Angeles band that performs a mix of funky blues, hip-hop and rap while advocating the "decriminalization" of marijuana. The Hill group has played Utah several times, including trips early in their history at the Utah State Fairgrounds.

Smokin' may also refer to the gathering of a collection of some of today's rising hip-hop, funk and soul performers.

Joining the California outfit are Ziggy Marley & the Melody Makers, the Fugees, Busta Rhymes, A Tribe Called Quest and Spearhead.

Marley is the son of Bob Marley, a Jamaican Rastafarian who is revered for his place in island blues music. Marley the son has made his own niche in the music world with several successful albums and some hit songs. The Fugees have also had solid success of late.

The festival is in the tradition of other recent group tours and music events. Utah isn't always a stop for major tours such as Lollapalooza.

Tickets for reserved seats are $27.50 or $20 for general seating on Wolf Mountain's somewhat grassy hill, behind the lighting and sound equipment. Tickets are available at the venue or at all SmithTix location.
