Schools
Davis County School District
The district recently agreed with the American Red Cross to use all county secondary schools as shelters in the case of a major disaster.
The Red Cross will train an assistant principal, school foods manager, head custodian and assistants in each school to function as a shelter management team and will pay for other costs. Secondary schools were chosen over elementary schools because they have more space and better sanitation facilities, such as showers.
District planning director Chase Rogers said he has found there is a widespread assumption that schools already are prepared to be disaster shelters - the agreement will bring reality more in line with that assumption.
