Gene Nelson, best remembered as the definitive cowboy Will Parker in the 1955 film version of "Oklahoma!", died of cancer Monday. He was 76.

Nelson, who went on to become a film and television director, found his greatest success as an actor in 1950s musicals, which included "The Daughter of Rosie O'Grady," "Tea for Two," "Lullaby of Broadway," "Three Sailors and a Girl" and "So This Is Paris."As a director, he worked with Elvis Presley in the films "Kissin' Cousins" and "Harum Scarum." He also directed "Hand of Death," "Hootenanny Hoot" and "Your Cheatin' Heart."
