The City Council voted 3-2 Tuesday to deny a request for a rezone of property at 1012 W. 1800 North that would have paved the way for Clinton's first-ever convenience store.

Maverik Country Stores wanted to build on the third-of-an-acre residential site, but the site is near the Clinton Elementary School, and the resulting controversy forced the council to table the zoning proposal at its Aug. 27 meeting.City Manager Dennis Cluff said although there is currently no store within the city limits, that will likely change in the future. Even if Maverik doesn't look for another site, Cluff feels it's only a matter of time before a store is built in the city.
