Since the country's hazardous-waste disposal program was launched in 1980, 1,387 seriously polluted dump sites have been identified by the Environmental Protection Agency.

The total includes 362 sites where construction needed to clean up the site has been completed. States with the most sites have substantial industrial development.New Jersey (116 sites) and Pennsylvania (111 sites) lead the nation in sites.
