A local resident and retired schoolteacher was honored recently as the Mt. Pleasant "Volunteer of the Year."

Clifford Cox, a native of Virginia, was honored for his efforts on behalf of Sanpete County. Leaving behind double careers in both the military and the construction trade, Cox volunteered at the Wasatch Academy, a private secondary school. He taught English as a second language, tutored math and science and served five years as a librarian.

He delighted the students by teaching them how to build musical instruments, such as the violin and guitar. A lover of both books and music, he served as assistant librarian at the public library.

Cox graduated from the University of Virginia with a bachelor's degree in business ad-ministration. During World War II, he taught meteorology and navigation for the Army Air Corp.

The construction industry brought him first to Salt Lake City, but his desire to share his love for "good things" brought him to Mt. Pleasant, he said.
