Two people have been charged in connection with an incident in which a 15-year-old girl was allegedly sold into marriage for $250 and some used furniture, police said.

Police on Friday charged that Abdul Azimi paid Mona Penney for her written permission for her daughter to be married. Maine law requires written parental permission for marriages involving anyone under 18 years old.Azimi, 29, and the teenager were allegedly married Nov. 1.

Azimi was indicted late Friday by a Cumberland County grand jury on charges of sexual assault on a minor, furnishing liquor to a minor and aggravated forgery, according to Portland Police Chief Michael Chitwood.

Azimi has been in jail since early December on charges of assaulting the girl.
