It should have ended in 1992 when the people in the Salt Lake Valley voted against light rail as a viable solution to our traffic problems.
As I think back to the election of November 1992, the way the ballot was written was deliberate deception to confuse the voters so that our elected officials and others who were pushing for light rail could come back to the voters and try to brainwash us into believing that what we voted against was the sales-tax increase to finance the system.Everyone who voted knows that they voted against the light-rail system as a solution to our traffic problems, and it had nothing to do with the sales-tax increase. I, and many others, would like an explanation from Gov. Leavitt, Sen. Hatch, Sen. Bennett, Mayor Corradini, John Pingree and other officials, either elected or appointed to office, as to why they continue to force it on us and have completely ignored the mandate from the people who still oppose the light-rail system. Why aren't you listening?
When people decide to seek elective office and be in public service, their first responsibility should be to the people who put enough faith and trust in them to vote them into office. When these officials seem to forget or ignore this responsibility, and think they are no longer accountable to the people, there becomes an abuse of power and they exercise unrighteous dominion over the people they were elected to serve.
I believe you have overstepped your powers and responsibility to the people of the Salt Lake Valley and this state by ignoring and overriding the mandate of the people in November 1992 to reject the light-rail system.
You seem to have a blind spot or a mental block when it comes to the light rail and do not seriously consider more up-to-date and better systems, which have been proven to work better without destroying the whole valley, and which could have already been in operation, considering the years that have been wasted pushing the light rail against the wishes of the majority.
Several years ago, The Coalition for Accountable Government sponsored a very educational and informative display and demonstration at Murray High School regarding the light rail and other workable systems. If you missed it and would like more information, it is readily available.
As a taxpayer for all of my adult life, I do not wish to subsidize what will definitely be a white elephant.
