Lee Bean, chairman of the department of sociology at the University of Utah, was awarded the Joseph J. Malone Fellowship. He spent two weeks at an Arab and Islamic studies program in Saudia Arabia in December.

Bean is one of 13 educators invited to participate in the Arab gulf countries fellowship. He attended briefs and lectures by government officials, private sector leaders and academic specialists. He visited historical, cultural and national development sites."These visits are the single most effective means of promoting understanding of the Arab world," said John Duke Anthony, president and CEO of the National Council on U.S.-Arab Relations, which sponsored the fellowship.

Before leaving the United States, Bean participated in round-table discussions and briefings on U.S.-Arab relations with foreign policy specialists.
