A brief look at three astronauts killed in NASA's Apollo 1 fire Jan. 27, 1967:

- Commander Virgil "Gus" Grissom: 40-year-old Air Force lieutenant colonel. One of original seven Mercury astronauts. Became second American in space in 1961. Flew in space twice. Wife Betty never remarried, still lives in Houston. Two children, now 43 and 46.- Edward White Jr.: 36-year-old Air Force lieutenant colonel. Member of second astronaut class. Became first U.S. spacewalker on Gemini 4 in 1965, his only spaceflight. Wife Patricia, who remarried, died in 1983. Two children, now 40 and 43.

- Roger Chaffee: 31-year-old Navy lieutenant commander. Member of third astronaut class. Never flew in space. Wife Martha remarried and divorced, lives near Santa Fe, N.M. Two children, now 35 and 38.
