The letters seem to say that anyone who opposes Wendy Weaver's position in the schools is a wild-eyed bigot and that no one has any right to judge her or deny her right to teach in the public schools.
First, I do not believe only LDS people had moral standards. I believe that people of many faiths object to the homosexual lifestyle on moral grounds, and believe it is important that they as parents be concerned about the moral caliber of the people who teach their children.Everyone says what a wonderful teacher Weaver is. Well, Fagin was a marvelous teacher. He befriended young boys, gave them a home, fed them and taught them a profession. They all looked up to him. Would any parent object to such a fine teacher?
Wise parents realize that when they place their child with a teacher, they are trusting their child's moral code with that teacher. Good parents have always (and should always) be vitally concerned that those who teach their children, indeed anyone's children, have characters above reproach.
Problem is, moral standards have eroded to an alarming degree. Honesty, decency, truth, right and wrong are relative.
As parents, we are responsible for our children. If we do not do our best to see that only the best people teach them, we are throwing them to the wolves as far as their character goes.
What a person is will always affect what he or she does - and teaches. If you don't care what your children become, then it doesn't matter who teaches them.
