Denver linebacker Bill Romanowski spit in the face of San Francisco wide receiver J.J. Stokes during Monday night's game.

Stokes said he became angry when Romanowski grabbed him in the groin during a pileup in the third quarter. "I got up and really got in his face," Stokes said. "And then he spit on me right in front of the ref. The ref didn't do anything. . . . That was the first time anyone ever spit on me on a football field."

Romanowski admitted he spit on Stokes.

"I spit in his face just out of frustration," Romanowski told KMGH-TV in Denver. "That's the way it goes out there."
