The mayor of this small town was arrested for allegedly allowing the operators of a pornographic Web site to photograph a nude woman on a sheriff's squad car assigned to him.
Mayor Craig S. Johnson, who also worked as a sheriff's deputy, was arrested Tuesday and released on his recognizance.High school students alerted the Worcester County Sheriff's Department to the photos - which show a nude woman apparently urinating on the car - on the "Wetlands" Internet site.
The Web site operator, Jon-David Messner, said Johnson contacted him last month, saying he was leaving the department and the photos would be a farewell prank.
"I thought it was crazy to be honest with you," said Messner, whose wife, Cherie, appears in the photos. "It's a porn site. It's not something I would think a mayor would want to be associated with."
Johnson, 41, was charged with two counts of misconduct in office, a misdemeanor with no mandatory sentence, county prosecutor Joel Todd said.
Johnson, who has worked for the sheriff's department since 1993, resigned a week ago.
Johnson, the first-term mayor of the Eastern Shore town of 2,200, declined to comment about the case. He did say he had not decided whether he will seek re-election in 1998.
