Walter Squires Poelman, age 66, passed away peacefully at his home on February 3, 1997 after a valiant year with cancer.

He was born March 12, 1930 in Murray, Utah, to Walter Jenkinson Poelman and Eva Beatrice Swain Squires.He married Mary Eleanor Stohl in the Salt Lake Temple July 18, 1958. He attended East High School and received a degree in accounting from the University of Utah. Following graduation, he was drafted into the Army and was assigned to Hawaii. He served in the Army Reserve at Fort Douglas until retirement.

Squires was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He completed a mission to the Netherlands from 1949 to 1951. He has served as a branch president, counselor in two bishoprics, high councilman, high priest group leader, and director of his stake family history center. He especially enjoyed his service as an ordinance worker in the Salt Lake Temple.

He was employed by the Hotel Utah, The Salt Lake Hardware Company, and was a civilian employee of the Department of the Air Force for over twenty-five years. The highlight of his civil service career was a five year assignment in Okinawa. He retired from Hill Air Force Base in 1993. Squires loved photography, his association with many people, and serving on various committees including Salt Lake's Sister City Committee.

He is survived by his wife, Eleanor, and five children: Elizabeth (David) Bunting, Pleasant Grove; John (Miho) Poelman, San Jose, CA; Catherine (David) Cox, Sandy; Brian Poelman and Christine (Michael) Ballard, both of Salt Lake City; ten grandchildren; three sisters and three brothers: Ellen (Don) Warner, Bountiful;Bonnie Murphy and Ann Thornton, Salt Lake City; Jaye (Barbara) Poelman, Bangkok, Thailand; Robert Poelman and Blair (Bernice) Poelman, Salt Lake City.

Funeral services will be held 12 noon, Saturday, February 8, 1997 at the Colonial Hills Ward, 1455 South 1700 East, Salt Lake. Friends may call at Larkin Sunset Lawn, 2350 E. 1300 South, Friday 6-8 p.m. and at the ward Saturday 10:30-11:45 a.m. Interment, Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
