Mix Motown groove, Texas grit and Memphis soul in one package of dynamite and you get Lavelle White.
The gospel-based blues singer will play the Dead Goat Saloon, 165 S. West Temple, Monday, Feb. 10. Showtime is 9:30 p.m.Although born in Louisiana, White grew up in Mississippi and started her road to music singing in church choirs. At 21, White moved to Texas and began singing in Houston blues clubs. Throughout the '60s and '70s, White recorded records for the Duke and Peacock labels and garnered a W.C. Handy nomination (the blues' equivalent of a Grammy).
White's influences range from the swinging Houston night life, Chicago's blues scene and, of course, the southern Baptist gospel choirs.
The singer's new album, "It Haven't Been Easy," was released in January.
