Just as it opens NCAA tournament play tonight, Massachusetts is haunted by an ugly memory of last year's glory: the Marcus Camby scandal.

Campus administrators announced Thursday they have finished the campus inquiry into the Camby affair. The announcement risked detracting from the excitement as the Minutemen prepared for their first-round basketball game with Louisville in Pittsburgh.

"It concerns me because . . . it's not necessarily pure competition. There's a lot of other stuff coming into it. That image gets shattered," said Peter Blain, a University of Massachusetts graduate student who was watching televised NCAA play at a Springfield sports bar.
