A three-alarm fire caused extensive damage to a Mount Olympus house Thursday night.
Fire crews initially responded to a reported field fire about 9 p.m., said Salt Lake County Assistant Battalion Chief Scott Collins. The call was subsequently changed to a house fire at 4833 S. Oak Terrace Drive (3270 East).Firefighters found flames emerging from the top edge of a door in the carport of a multi-level house, Collins said. The fire had apparently originated inside the house and had burned for some time, he said. No one was inside.
About 18 firefighters with three engines and one truck responded to the fire. The firefighters brought the fire under control within five minutes, but they spent more than an hour cooling hot spots and extinguishing hidden, small fires within floors and walls, Collins said.
Although little damage spread outside, "damage is extensive inside the building," Collins said. Damage is estimated at about $60,000.
