Stanford won the NCAA tournament in 1942, then didn't get back into it until 1989.

On Sunday, the Cardinal finally got past the second round, beating Wake Forest 72-66.In 1989, the Cardinal lost in the first round to Siena, even though they were a third seed in the East and Siena was a 14.

Three years later, as a No. 12 in the Southeast, Stanford met up with Alabama, a fifth seed with three future NBA players, including Latrell Sprewell and Robert Horry. The Cardinal lost 80-75.

Two years ago, Stanford won its opener as a 10th seed, beating North Carolina Charlotte 70-68 in the East. But UMass routed the Cardinal in the second round.
